bijan sabet: Loyalty

Loyalty

Every week I spend a fair amount of time trying to get the best people to work for one of our portfolio companies.

I’m always impressed when I talk to someone that wants to leave their company but uneasy about it because of loyalty (to the founders, employees, investors, etc).

Leaving a job isn’t easy under any conditions. It’s not fun to walk into your office and tell people that gave you a chance and are now depending on you that it’s time to move on.

My advice: if you are excited about a new opportunity (can’t sleep or think of anything except the new thing) then it’s time to go.

It may not feel like the loyal thing to do but I believe it is. In your heart you don’t want to be there and the team at the current company really doesn’t want you to stay if that’s not your desire either.

The best way to act in a way that is consistent with your sense of loyalty is to shoot straight and give your current employer/company plenty of transition time and support afterwards. They will appreciate it.

Loyalty is something that is earned. Many loyal folks will say they will take a bullet for a former colleague or partner. I know that feeling all too well.

That type of loyalty is something special.

HIRED! - MTV Series - Weekdays @ 4:00 p.m.

I think it’s totally awesome MTV is stepping right in and doing a documentary on giving job advice. Even cooler is the social media position at Vayner Media, one of the top social media agencies in NYC. Vayner Media uses a recruiter to team up with the candidates beforehand to prime and prep them for their interviews. I love the feedback and I love the transparency into the mind of a recruiter.

Catch the full-length episodes here.

I Spy… Something New on my Twitter Profile

Can you see it? Well, I hope so. I spent 5 extra seconds adding a bright red arrow pointing to the obvious.

I’m in the market for a new jawb* (Yes, that’s the new & hip way to spell “job”). I’m looking for something adventurous and promising. Perhaps somewhere that I can flex my social media muscle at bit more often. And more over, somewhere that has an awesome benefits package. My father passed away last January and my health insurance has since dropped me from their coverage. Buying health insurance is tricky and pricier than what I can afford.

Nonetheless, I know the next few weeks will be filled with more posts about finding a PR job in Miami… in a recession. Don’t worry -> I’m hopeful and optimistic that something somewhere better will truly come along.

Two New Job Postings!

The weather has taken a turn for the better today. Hopefully it stays that way. :)

Other happy thoughts include two job opportunities I saw today. Although I’m not currently looking for a job, I know a lot of people who are. Take a look:

  • Social Media Coordinator - rbb Public Relations’s Digital Park division
To view the original job posting, click here.
  • Senior Account Executive - Schwartz Media Solutions
To view the original job posting, click here.

Also be sure to check out this article I saw today on Mashable — How Job Seekers Are Using Social Media for Real Results.

I’m going to keep this post short and sweet. I’m totally tired and I need all the energy for tomorrow’s SMCSF March Meetup, school and work.

Cheers!
